Costa Book Awards: Hilary Mantel takes on graphic novel

Hilary Mantel and Joff Winterhart

The Costa Book Awards have for the first time nominated two graphic books, in the novel and biography categories.

The shortlists for the Costa Book Awards announced today pit established names such as Hilary Mantel and Artemis Cooper against graphic novelist Joff Winterhart and graphic memoirists Mary M Talbot and Bryan Talbot.

There are five categories in all — novel, first novel, biography, poetry and children’s — each with four books on each shortlist. After the winner of each category is announced (and is awarded £5,000) the five books compete for the overall Costa Prize worth £30,000.

In the novel category Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up the Bodies is shortlisted alongside Days of the Bagnold Summer by Joff Winterhart, a graphic novel that charts the relationship between 52-year-old librarian Sue and her 15-year-old son Daniel. The other two books nominated are Life! Death! Prizes! by Stephen May, the author’s second novel, and journalist and novelist James Meek’s The Heart Broke In.
